The Calanais Visitor Centre serves the most well known visitor attraction in the Outer Hebrides, the Calanais Standing Stones. The Cafe is a very busy place and popular with visitors and locals.


The main responsibility of our Chef is to prepare, produce and deliver the agreed menu, maintain health and hygiene standards, order ingredients, maintain stock and cost control, while helping to promote the Calanais Café by delivering a high-quality food service, which ensures all visitors have an enjoyable and rewarding dining experience. They are expected to provide excellent customer care, a welcoming atmosphere and the highest quality of service and food at all times.

Duties will include, but are not limited to:

• Undertake menu planning in consultation with the Catering Manager, in line with food buying and production policy
• Deliver the preparation and cooking of all food in accordance with specified menus
• In conjunction with the Catering Manager, determine quantities to be prepared, taking into account predicted visitor levels
• Maintain records of stock and deliveries as required
• Ensure that adequate stocks of food are maintained
• Check quantity and quality of stock received and notify suppliers of deficiencies
• Ensure all hygiene and health and safety processes are followed and recorded as required
• Train, develop and oversee the work of seasonal kitchen staff
• Own maintenance of washing and cleaning of floors, crockery, utensils, work surfaces and other kitchens equipment to ensure that the necessary hygiene and health and safety standards are maintained in the kitchen and associated areas, as appropriate
• Ensure that the appropriate clothing, including head wear, is worn at all times in accordance with policy and regulations
• In conjunction with the Catering Manager, cooperate fully with the statutory inspections and implement recommendations, as appropriate
• To undertake such other duties as may be determined from time to time within the general scope of the post

• To understand responsibilities in relation to fire procedures, health and safety, COSSH, infection control, food hygiene and emergency aid
• Participation in staff meetings
• Participation in training activities
• To serve food efficiently from kitchen
• Ensure that all equipment is fully operational throughout the day
• Participation in staff supervision and personal development review
• All duties must be carried out to comply with notification of accidents and other Health and Safety requirements, statutory legislation and in particular the health and hygiene regulations.

You must possess:

Basic Food Hygiene certificate - essential
Intermediate Food Hygiene certificate - desirable
• Experience of preparing and delivering high quality food in a high-volume business or operation
• The ability to maintain excellent results under pressure
• The ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team
• A customer focussed attitude and be able to ensure the consistent delivery of a quality visitor experience
• Proficient verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent organisational skills
• The ability to prioritise your work.


Dependent on experience and qualifications.


Five days out of seven, including weekend and bank holidays, Sunday closed. Hours vary by season and are based on a daily pattern around 08:00 to 21:00 covered by 3 shifts. This is a full time post for the right candidate.
